TOP TIPS - How to keep Surprise crabs!

Why are they called Surprise crabs? Well the simple reason is that you don’t know what your going to get. These small baby unidentified crabs could grow into one of hundreds of different species. They might stay small and just go about their daily business in there, but, they could grow into something big, colourful, or get super cool giant claws, spikes, weird colours, etc. You simply don’t know, but, it’s fun finding out! Surprise crabs are one of the most interesting animals you can keep. They are basically small unidentified baby crabs, generally they are not suitable for a main display as they may damage corals or cause other damage. However they do a very useful job of cleaning up sumps and refugiums, meaning better water parameters for your display. Having a Surprise crab running around your sump helps improve water quality, and control some pests like Bristleworms etc. It’s one of the easiest and cheapest ways of improving your main tank. Simply pop one or more of these inexpensive animals in your sump or refugium, and instantly start gaining the benefits with no extra effort or work required. Highly recommended!

These are animals that generally are NOT suitable for keeping in most reef tanks!

These animals are best kept in refugiums or sumps. They make excellent clean up crew for areas of your system where food etc may accumulate where your other clean up crew cannot get to it. This helps to keep a system clean, meaning better water parameters for the display too. It also gives you the chance to keep something cool that you can’t keep in your main tank.

Not suitable for reef tanks. May also not be safe with fish.
