Mushrooms!

One of the easiest corals to keep, colourful, and they grow well too!

Mushroom corals are really easy, and are a fantastic addition to any reef aquarium.

AQUACULTURE IN VIETNAM

Individual heads of mushrooms sold by the head. This is an aqua-cultured coral from Vietnam.

These aqua-cultured corals are more colourful than is typical for a coral of this type. Only the very brightest specimens are selected as parent colonies. Over time these corals have got better and better. By only farming from specimens that are as good, or better than the parent colonies before the colour of these corals is now the best they have ever been.

Sustainable coral farms like this are an important source of income for many families in Vietnam. By buying an aqua-cultured coral like this, you are helping to support those families, and also to reduce the amount collected from wild reefs.

They’re great space fillers.

They multiply at a steady rate, making them an ideal way to fill those trickier shady spots, or filling out large blank areas in a tank too.

They’re showstoppers!

Some like the Dreamscape mushrooms, Interstellars, and these Superman Tongas are so bright they can even outshine SPS and LPS. A good mushroom is a far rarer thing than a good Scoly or Torch, and top end mushrooms can go into hundreds, or even thousands of pounds per head. But, at the other end of the scale, even with high end mushrooms you can often pick up baby ones for under £100, and you can always get good mushrooms in the £20 to £40 range. Don’t worry if you only buy single small ones, as they soon grow and start multiplying. Mushrooms look best in little groups in the tank, so if you haven’t already got any mushrooms try to get 2 or 3 to start you off with your mushroom area. Before long they might be paying for your whole tank and upgrade too (see below).

They are easy to keep.

They are super easy to keep and even complete beginners will soon see baby ones popping up, the marine version of the Molly or Swordtail in freshwater tanks. Ideal for those new to corals, or just wanting something easy to keep.

The babies are worth shop credit.

Unlike tank bred baby guppies which are almost worthless, baby mushrooms are well sought after. Several of our customers have a 1ft square of mushrooms, and trading in the babies that pop out of there easily funds their whole aquarium and hobby. We happily take in home farmed baby mushrooms in groups of 30+ at a tank as fast as we can get them. A little batch of baby mushrooms like that is often worth £100 to £400 a time in shop credit depending on size, colour and type. A single 1ft square can grow that many in 4-8 weeks. Care advice Mushroom corals

EASY TO KEEP

Mushrooms are an ideal first coral, being one of the easiest corals to keep. The only thing you need to watch is make sure you put them in a shady spot, other than that they thrive in almost all conditions.

PLACEMENT

Mushrooms will do ok in low, and even very low flow rates, but, keeping them in medium flow will often bring faster growth rates. Place in heavy shade low down in the tank.

WATER QUALITY

All corals require reasonable water quality. Temperature and salinity should be kept as stable as possible, and low levels of nitrates and phosphates. Although mushroom corals can thrive in poor quality water, growth is far more spectacular with heavy water changes. Mushrooms can survive and still thrive under a standard maintenance regime, but, for the best growth rates on mushrooms change around 50% of the water weekly, although this is only necessary if you wish to maximise growth rates.

LIGHTING

When you receive your coral ensure you do not place it in a spot that is too brightly lit. If a coral is in a spot that is a little low on light it will generally manage ok. If the spot is too bright it can bleach the coral. If in doubt as to the right spot too little light is unlikely to do much harm, compared to too much light., this is particularly true with mushrooms, especially Yumas.

The more green Zooxanthellae a mushroom has, the more light dependent it is. Mushrooms with little or no Zooxanthellae have very little green, and so will be more towards pink, red, orange, or yellow, in colour. Mushrooms mostly depend on capturing food rather than light for photosynthesis.

So green coloured mushrooms tend to be more tolerant of low to medium light. Blue mushrooms require low light. Red mushrooms usually do best in low to very low light levels. Orange, yellow, and, pink, mushrooms tend to do best in heavy shade, and can be grown in pitch black conditions.

FLOW

The amount of flow a coral needs depends on the type of coral. See PLACEMENT above, or, contact us if you are unsure.

FEEDING

We recommend target feeding corals at least once a week You may also wish to add liquid coral food too. For best results we recommend feeding mushroom corals frozen Mysis at least twice a week, and at least one feed a week with liquid coral food. Furry mushrooms should be fed once or twice a day. We recommend using Salty Revolution Coral Food 99. A completely revolutionary approach to coral nutrition. This is available here: CLICK HERE

COMPATIBILITY

Some fish may peck at or eat corals. Some inverts may also do so. If this is a species that does not eat coral in the wild, then chances are it is only doing so in captivity due to lack of food. Increase the amount of food and/or frequency of feeding. If they are a species that does eat corals in the wild then remove any fish or inverts that are harassing the coral.

SIZE

All frags vary in size in appearance and so may be a different size, colour, or, shape, compared to the photo, which is shown only as a rough guide. As a rough guide when opened fully out:

Tiny = roughly a quarter of the size of medium (blunt end of a Bic biro or smaller).
Small = roughly half the size of medium (5p size approx).
Medium = roughly 10p size (our most popular size).
Large = roughly one and a half times the size of a medium.
XL = roughly double the size of a medium.
XXL = roughly triple the size of a medium ( a real showpiece).

COMPATIBILITY

Very few animals eat or harass mushroom corals. Some triggerfish such as Picasso triggers, and some Pufferfish such as Dogface puffers may eat mushrooms, but, very little else will touch mushrooms. Some inverts may do so, but, very few. Remove any fish or inverts that are harassing the coral.
