What is a mini frag?

A mini frag is a little smaller than our standard sized frags. Often they are not much smaller than our standard size frags. Each month I make 500+ soft coral frags, most months it is 1,000+ frags per month or more (our record is making 4,900 frags in just 1 week!

When you frag corals not every frag ends up the same size, so once I’ve finished making a batch of frags (usually 100-300 frags per batch). I then look over all the trays and any frags that I think are a little smaller than the others I pull out and put into our Mini frags tray. Sometimes when we frag a colony of something that might be a little patch of another coral growing on the side of the rock. As it’s often only a few polyps it’s usually not worth my time photographing and creating a listing for say a few polyps of Zoas, so these little oddball ones i frag up and put them on the mini frags tray. Along with any odd bits of coral growing on the eggcrate etc.

Every now and then we have a clearout of all of these mini frags. Sometimes if we haven’t cleared the tray for a while some of the mini frags have grown so much they can end up the size of our standard frags!

When you buy mini frags we pick out the most varieties and colours as we can. So if you buy say 20 mini frags we try to pick out 20 different ones. Sometimes you may get two of the same one, but, you will get at least 16 different types/colours.

Generally mini frags are a mix of:

2-4 polyp frags of Vietnam Zoas.
1-2 polyp frags of Indo Zoas.
1-2 polyp frags of named Zoas.
1-2 polyps of Palys
Mini frags of GSP
1 baby Mushroom
1-2 polyps of Clove polyps
Sometimes there is also the odd baby leather coral, mini frags of things such as; Xenia, Knopia, Sympodium etc.

Usually when we pick from the mini frags tray around half of the frags are typically Zoas or Palys of various types. About a quarter of the frags are usually Star polyps (GSP) in various colours. The remaining quarter of the frags may be a medley of different things.

That’s another reason why mini frags are so much fun, because when the box arrives you don’t know what’s inside! Sometimes you might have got one of the one off corals and have something unique, sometimes you might strike gold and get a sinkle polyp named Zoa which might normlly be £20, £40, or more for that one frag on it’s own! Every box is like Christmas day!

The mini frag riddle. - Can you solve it?

Three friends all decide to buy the same size nano tank, and have a race to see who can fill their reef tank up the fastest. They work out they will need 24 corals each to do this. To make it fair they are each only allowed to spend the same amount of money on their tank each month.

Reefkeeper A buys 24 soft coral colonies.

Reefkeeper B buys 24 soft coral frags.

Reefkeeper C buys 24 mini soft coral frags.

Reefkeeper C fills his tank up the fastest, and wins the race.

Why does he win?
