Double barred rabbitfish (Siganus virigatus).

SIZE WARNING - SEE DESCRIPTION

An excellent grazing fish for the larger marine aquarium. All Rabbitfish/Foxfaces require tanks at least 1,000 litres plus, even juveniles, as they do grow very quickly if cared for well. The dorsal spines are venomous, if mishandled the spines can inflict a sting. The venom isn’t generally very dangerous, but, can be painful. We recommend only housing 1 Rabbitfish/Foxface per aquarium. Feed primarily on seaweed or appropriate flake food. We recommend Ocean Nutrition’s Green Seaweed, Formula 2 Flake, and Spirulina Flake. they will also eat pellets and frozen foods, but, for the best results we recommend feeding mostly seaweed or the 2 flake foods above. A very colourful fish, that can also rapidly change colour. Foxfaces and Rabbitfish are quite intelligent and quickly recognize their owners. Highly recommended.

SIZE

Typically shipped at 1” to 3”, most specimens stop growing at 10”, some may reach 12” or more.

COMPATIBILITY

Requires a minimum of 1,000 litres, even for juveniles. Keep only 1 Rabbitfish/Foxface per tank as they may squabble. Safe with almost all small reef fish, and large predatory fish too. Avoid housing with Moorish Idols (Zanclus cornutus) as the Moorish Idol may be aggressive towards them. Safe with most soft corals except Zoas, risky with LPS or SPS. Safe with all but the smallest of mobile inverts. Venomous (see above).

SIZE WARNING! THIS FISH CAN GROW EXTREMELY LARGE, AND MAY DO SO VERY QUICKLY!

All fish with a large potential size may need special care, and may require a tank set up in a particular way to suit their specific needs. Large fish need a lot of space, even as juveniles they may need large tanks to get enough exercise to develop properly. Large fish may view smaller tankmates as food. Large fish may sometimes damage equipment and bite through power cables. Also bear in mind that large fish can eat a lot of food. It’s not unusual for 1 large fish to eat several packs of frozen food a day, which can be expensive. Large fish can be difficult to rehome, so do not purchase them unless you already have the facilities to house them at a larger size.
