Panther grouper (Cromileptes altivelis).

WARNING: Grows large quickly, venomous, predatory!

  • Grows large quickly - A 2” (50mm) baby can reach 10”+ (250mm+) in just 26 weeks. While they generally stop growing at 12”-18” (300-450mm), they can reach 24” (600mm) or more.

  • Venomous - Can squirt a milky white toxin from the skin which can wipe a tank, and probably isn’t great for their owner either. It is extremely rare, but, it can happen if they are badly wounded.

  • Predatory - This fish has a huge mouth. At just 6 months old a 10” specimen can eat 3”-4” tangs and angels, or long thin fish such gobies and wrasses up to 12”, yep even longer than itself! Be careful with choice of tankmates!

We generally import these as small juveniles. Whilst not an aggressive fish they will eat anything they can fit whole into their large mouths. They can grow quickly too, so should only be housed with fish too large to fit in their mouth whole. They can become very tame and make excellent additions to the larger aquarium. If attacked they can release a milky white toxin into the aquarium through pores in their skin. It is extremely rare for them to do so, and the toxin rarely causes any issues. It is easily removed with carbon, ozone, skimming, or water changes. In the 30+ years in the hobby I have only ever heard of them doing this twice.

SIZE

Typically we import 1” to 4” juveniles. They can quickly reach 12” or more, often within a few months. They generally stop growing around 15”, but, some specimens can slowly reach 24” or more.

COMPATIBILITY

Safe with all corals. Will eat any fish (and some mobile inverts) if they can fit them whole into their large mouths. Best kept with large and deep bodied fishes that are too tall to fit into their mouth.

SIZE WARNING! THIS FISH CAN GROW EXTREMELY LARGE, AND MAY DO SO VERY QUICKLY!

All fish with a large potential size may need special care, and may require a tank set up in a particular way to suit their specific needs. Large fish need a lot of space, even as juveniles they may need large tanks to get enough exercise to develop properly. Large fish may view smaller tankmates as food. Large fish may sometimes damage equipment and bite through power cables. Also bear in mind that large fish can eat a lot of food. It’s not unusual for 1 large fish to eat several packs of frozen food a day, which can be expensive. Large fish can be difficult to rehome, so do not purchase them unless you already have the facilities to house them at a larger size.
