Will Cleaner wrasse eat Ich / WS / Brook?

Watching their cleaning behaviour is fascinating, especially in large tanks with lots of large fish. However they are not a reliable method of disease control, and contrary to the popular myths they WILL NOT eat WS, Ich, Brook, etc. They will sometimes eat Flukes and other large parasites such as Anchor worms, but, they are not always reliable, and can catch them themselves. If only one Cleaner wrasse is kept then they cannot clean themselves either. We recommend keeping Cleaner wrasses in pairs.

Cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus).

An easily kept species providing it is fed at least twice per day using very tiny frozen food such as frozen cyclops or frozen copepods. Whilst they may pick at larger foods they are unlikely to get enough to eat unless fed a sufficient amount of very tiny food. Can be kept individually or in pairs with care. Will often spawn in aquariums. As with most wrasses a tight fitting lid is essential.

SIZE

They are generally 2” to 4”, some specimens may reach upto 5”.

COMPATIBILITY

Reef safe. As with many types of wrasse it may cocoon in mucous at night and during shipping. They may also hide when moved to a new aquarium. Most wrasses are out and about within a day or two, but, some take 3 weeks or more to appear. Don’t worry they will be coming out and feeding at night. We recommend feeding a minimum of twice per day on suitable frozen food. Some small reef fish can jump from an open topped aquarium, we recommend using a tight fitting lid with no gaps.
