WARNING VENOMOUS FISH! - DANGER TO THE AQUARIST (see below)!

An excellent fish for a medium to large sized predator tank. Will eat any fish that fit comfortably whole in their mouths. They can typically eat long thin fish such as wrasses and gobies up to their own body length, or taller fish such as angelfish up to half their body length. Volitans lionfish are one of the largest species, and one of the fastest growing lionfish too. A 2” baby can hit nearly a foot in as little as 9 months.

SIZE

Sold at various sizes. A 2” baby can hit 6”-7” within 3-6 months, and by 9 months old can be nudging at a foot long. Once they reach 10”-12” growth suddenly slows considerably. We usually only import them from the Eastern Indian Ocean, and Western Pacific, from these areas they rarely get bigger than 14”. Volitans from the Red Sea can hit 18”+, with some specimens eventually reaching best part of 2ft long.

COMPATIBILITY

Safe with all corals. Safe with most inverts except shrimps. Should not be kept with any fish under 6” long. Care should be taken with any fish under 12” long. Preferred tank size is around 500 litres. Can be kept singly, in pairs, or in groups.

The dorsal spines of this fish contain large amounts of extremely toxic neurotoxin (venom). Never lean over or place yourself above a Lionfish, if surprised they can leap several feet straight upwards. Take care when doing maintenance. Never hand feed this fish. Take extreme care whilst netting, bagging, or debagging this fish. The venom can take up to 20 minutes to take effect. Do not wait for pain to begin.

If possible write “VENOM: PTEROIS ANTENNATA” on your forearm

in permanent marker so that health workers are aware of any problems if you are unable to tell them. Apply as much heat to the wound as possible, a hair dryer is ideal. Ensure hands are dry before handling electrics. If treated quickly stings are generally not life threatening. However,
