Miniata grouper (Cephalopholis miniata).

One of the smaller Grouper species. They can grow very quickly and have extremely large mouths. They can swallow fish upto 2/3 of their own body length whole, and may even tackle larger fish. tank-mates need to be taller in the body than the width of the Grouper’s mouth. At adult size the mouth can be 3” or more across, so all tank-mates need to have a body that is 3” or more high so they do not get swallowed. An easily kept and attractive species. Suitable for tanks of 500 litres or more.

SIZE

Typically we import 1” to 4” juveniles. They can quickly reach 10” or more, often within a few months. They generally stop growing around 8”, but, some specimens can slowly reach 14” or more.

COMPATIBILITY

Safe with all corals. Will eat any fish (and some mobile inverts) if they can fit them whole into their large mouths. Best kept with large and deep bodied fishes that are too tall to fit into their mouth.
