Yellow tang, captive bred (Zebrasoma flavescens).

These are captive bred specimens. Although a popular fish with beginners to the hobby, they are actually quite a difficult fish, and not recommended for those new to the hobby. In the wild they feed almost entirely on red macroalgae, and this needs to be a key part of their diet. Yellow tangs need a very high iron content diet, and green algae doesn’t contain enough iron to maintain them long term. Other alternatives to consider are:

Heraldi dwarf angelfish (Centropyge heraldi).

Pyramid butterflies (Hemitaurichthys polylepis).

Purple tangs (Zebrasoma xanthurum). Purple tangs are much easier to keep than Yellow tangs, are much less aggressive and more colourful than Yellow tangs too.

Gem tangs (Zebrasoma gemmatum). Gems are the most peaceful of all the Zebrasoma species.

SIZE

Shipped at around 50p size. May reach 10” in the wild, but, rarely reach more than 6” in captivity due to the difficulty in replicating their wild diet.

COMPATIBILITY

Can be kept singly in tanks of 500 litres or more, and can be kept in groups of 5+ similar sized individuals in tanks of 1,000 litres or more. Groups of 2-4 individuals tend to bicker and fight, they do best in large shoals, if not house individually. Often aggressive against other similar sized fishes, and fish smaller than themselves. Much more aggressive when mature than the similar Purple tang. Due to the current ban on collecting wild Yellow tangs from Hawaii (which we campaigned for since 2013).
