Pyramid butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys polylepis).

One of my most favourite fish. ❤ These are one of the few completely reef safe Butterflyfish. They feed on food drifting in the water column, and shoal too, just like Chromis (Chromis viridis). They typically only get to around 4" (100mm), and even a modest 200 litre (55 US gallon) aquarium is large enough to keep a pair or shoal of these beauties. A stunning centrepiece fish for small to moderate sized reef aquariums, and even more incredible as a shoal in larger tanks. Super easy to keep, and much less aggressive than other similar shaped and coloured fish such as Tangs or Angels. Often the most numerous fish species on many reefs, but, only rarely imported. Which is a shame because these are one of the very best fish you can put in a reef aquarium being brightly coloured, easy to keep, 100% reef safe, shoaling, not overly large, and peaceful. The perfect reef tank inhabitant.

SIZE

Typically 2” to 3”, may reach up to 4”.

COMPATIBILITY

Reef safe with all corals. Peaceful. Easy to keep. Avoid housing with aggressive fish such as Yellow Tangs, which may bully the Butterflyfish. These are a shoaling fish that need to be kept in pairs or groups.
